The
game of Water Polo evolved in England in the early 1870’s and quickly spread
across Europe and into the USA. In 1900 it became the first team sport to be
brought to the Olympic programme.
Since 1895 Cheltenham has been the home of a top Water Polo team. In 1962, Cheltenham was one of the founder members of the National Water Polo League. In the 2006/07-season Cheltenham senior team was runner up in the premier division of this league as well as competing in the European Cup in Barcelona. At present Cheltenham is proud of its 9 representatives in the British Water Polo squads as well as having several players who have recently retired from international representation. |
